Facebook and MySpace - Week 3

I have to admit it was neat getting contacted by so many friends this past week. Some from the past and some that I only get to see at MLA. We cannot use either Facebook or MySpace on my campus. It is blocked by campus IT from 8AM - 5 PM, Monday - Friday. This is unfortunate since several of my colleagues that contacted me was using it in their library. It seems to be a very good way to communicate with the students.

I must admit I was overwhelmed by some of the Facebooks I visited. They seemed so very busy and had so much information that you didn't know where to start. What's with the sold gifts on Facebook. What are you suppose to do with them? I didn't feel comfortable answering all the questions on setup so chose to only answer some of them.

Wiki vs Blog

This weeks assignment was to develop a wiki. I thought it was much harder than the blog. The blog will require more maintenance as it is only one voice and personal. The wiki is not for control freaks since there is no control over content. The wiki is open to collaboration and would be useful when seeking input from others.

Dena's 60+ Cruising Wiki

I now have a wiki to keep everyone informed about 60+ cruising. It is located at
http://denas60plus.wetpaint.com/

My hubby and I enjoy cruising so much and our hobby is keeping up with cruise lines and various ports of call. I will be putting some of my favorite links to cruise information on the wiki. I would love for others to add their favorites and share their cruise experiences. You don't have to be 60+ but since some consider us over-the-hill, I thought it would be fun to hear from those that made it over the hill or those nearing the summit.

RSS Feeds the Soul

RSS feeds could provide immediate updates on various library services. A feed could have announced immediately our early closure last Friday due to snow. Patrons would enjoy using feeds as a Table of Contents service with their favorite journals or to keep up-to-date on particular subjects via PubMed. It is nice as the information comes to you instead of you seeking the information. RSS does indeed feed the soul.

Something New

Blogging is a new experience. I'm finding it exciting. I guess we are really not too old to learn new things.

My daughter has a blog about my beautiful granddaughter entitled "A Growing Violet". It is special because it allows me to keep up with Violet as she grows. We are separated by miles and only get to visit a couple of times a year and the blog makes the distance seem smaller.

Guess what, Violet? Mimi has a blog and you will need to get Mommy to read it to you.

This blogging may not be as hard as I first expected.
